Lakha Mandal Shiv Temple

Lakhamandal Shiv Temple is an ancient Hindu temple complex located in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Dehradun district, Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is a site of immense spiritual and archaeological significance, known for its association with the Mahabharata and its thousands of discovered Shivalingas.

Key Highlights & Features
  • The “Lakh” Lingas: The name “Lakhamandal” is derived from Lakha (many or a lakh) and Mandal (temple or lingam). The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unearthed hundreds of Shivalingas of various sizes in the surrounding area.
  • Graphite Shivling: The main attraction is a unique graphite Shivalinga that sparkles and reflects its surroundings when water is poured on it.
  • Architecture: Built primarily in the North Indian Nagara style around the 12th–13th century CE, the complex also contains remains dating back to the 5th–8th century Gupta period.
  • Dwarpals (Guardians): Outside the shrine stand two 6-foot statues, often called Danav and Manav. Local legends suggest that if a person who has recently died is placed before them, they may briefly come back to life to take Lord Shiva’s name before passing permanently.
